ODISSI & WELLNESS

Dance, Movement and Wellbeing

Dance is first and foremost an art. But the sustained practice of dance also engages the body and mind in unusually rich ways.Odissi asks us to coordinate posture, movement, rhythm, memory, attention, musicality and expression.

Through regular practice, students may experience improvements in areas such as:

  • body awareness
  • coordination
  • balance
  • posture
  • mobility and flexibility
  • muscular control
  • endurance
  • concentration
  • memory
  • confidence
  • emotional expression

Just as importantly, dance gives us time to move with attention and purpose.

For many students, the weekly class becomes a space to step away from routine and reconnect with themselves.

Dance Is More Than Exercise . Odissi is not a fitness programme disguised as classical dance. Its value is much richer.

When we dance, physical movement is connected with rhythm, music, gesture, imagination and emotion.

The body is not simply exercising. It is communicating. That combination is what makes dance different.

Movement Through Life.

Bodies change. Our relationship with movement changes too. A meaningful dance practice does not necessarily require us to move exactly as we did at twenty. It asks us to remain attentive—to balance aspiration with awareness and to discover what the body can express at different stages of life.

Age does not end expression. It changes its language.

Dance and Women's Wellbeing.

Women's relationships with their bodies can change significantly through different phases of life. Movement and dance may offer a valuable way to maintain body awareness, confidence, mobility and a sense of connection with oneself.

Srijati Arts has also explored the relationship between dance and women's health through conversations and educational initiatives.

Dance and Women's Health

Watch our conversation exploring dance and women's health with a gynaecologist. The video is linked down.

Dance classes are educational and artistic activities and are not a substitute for medical care. Anyone with an injury, medical condition or specific health concern should seek appropriate professional medical advice before beginning or modifying a physical activity programme.

Dance From Where You Are

You do not need a stage.

You do not need a perfect body.

You do not have to wait until you are fitter, younger or more confident.

Start with a little space.

Listen.

Move.

Learn.

And allow dance to become part of your life.
